It's a rare film that can manage to effectively achieve both.

It's true that Mr Nobody is a challenge to make sense of, even compared to other films that employ nonlinear storytelling tactics.

If you've seen it but are still struggling with putting the pieces together, consider this an attempt at an interpretation:

[spoiler warning]

The multiple branches of a life story that we see in most of the movie are the dream of a younger Nemo (though it's hard to tell what age: 9? 15? 34?) of how his future life might unfold. The 2092 future doesn't exist yet (as the 118-year-old Nemo himself tells the interviewer at some point near the ending) except in Nemo's dreams or in his imagination.

Just like an unfinished chess game's possible multiple future developments co-exist simultaneously in the chess player's mind before he/she makes a move, so do young Nemo's possible future life stories co-exist (in his dream(s)?) simultaneously before a crucial decision is made.

The multiple possible life stories keep on branching and branching, but in this film they are woven into three distinct threads. In one of them, Nemo ends up marrying a girl who loves someone else. In another thread, he ends up marrying a girl he doesn't love. And then there's a thread in which Nemo and the girl are completely in love with each other. But the trouble is: in this thread, circumstances conspire, time and again, to prevent them from living together happily.

As Nemo dreams of his life's possible future paths and his life's ending, he is trying to understand which of the three women is his true love. When he gets to the final answer, "Anna", he exclaims: "This is the happiest day of my life!", and then -- in a way -- time starts rolling all the way back to the point(s) where the crucial decision(s) is/are made.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-112128161596156210.post-62950124960676626922012-12-23T01:35:56.178-08:002012-12-23T01:35:56.178-08:00Yeah, most Swedish films these days seem pretty ch...Yeah, most Swedish films these days seem pretty cheesy. The screenplay is amazingly deep and the animation is amazingly detailed. Near the very end, as they are driving on the road at night, notice how the fireflies light up after the headlights appear. This is a fine detail that only those who have seen fireflies in the countryside would know, this is something I only saw in real life this past summer. I am in awe. They're better than Pixar and pretty much every studio in the world. That doesn't devalue what Pixar do.

I'm not crediting John Lasseter with reinvigorating traditional animation. I simply stated that after Disney shut down animation he reopened the production arm and that is correct. People who make films like Chico and Rita and the Illusionist are keeping hand drawn animation alive not John Lasseter.

The whole point of the article is that I don't think there is enough hand drawn animation.Angry man film bloghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04778440317089653823noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-112128161596156210.post-4315168785715486492012-05-10T20:39:50.625-07:002012-05-10T20:39:50.625-07:00Pixar and Ghibli should not even be mentioned in t...Pixar and Ghibli should not even be mentioned in the same sentence. Ghibli is real "art" who is able to generate success without constant explosions, wisecracks, and geek appeal.

And why is John Lasseter always given credit for restoring traditional animation? After Princess and the Frog and Winnie the Pooh disappointed at the box office, he pulled the plug again. There is no traditional animated project at Disney, only the usual CG stuff. I'm sure these upcoming films will look very detailed, and the fur/snow/grass/water splashes, etc. will look totally real... but it won't have the same appeal.
